2 The future of wind energy

A great advantage of using wind energy is that, unlike power generation from combustion of fossil fuels, it produces no gas emissions. Even a small 750 kW wind turbine operating with wind speeds just above that of turbine cut-off would reduce annual emissions to the atmosphere by 1200 t of carbon dioxide, 6.9 t of sulphur dioxide and 4.3 t of nitrogen dioxide, compared with the equivalent power output from coal-fired generators. Nevertheless, wind turbines and their infrastructures are substa

3.4 School Improvement Partners

Following the introduction of School Improvement Partners during 2006–7, governing bodies will no longer be required to take external advice on the head teacher's performance management. Instead, each governing body will be advised by its School Improvement Partner on its management of the head's performance and appraisal. This advice (DfES/Ofsted 2005) will cover the areas currently covered by the External Adviser.

1 Why sustainable energy matters

One of the greatest challenges facing humanity during the twenty-first century must surely be that of giving everyone on the planet access to safe, clean and sustainable energy supplies.

Throughout history, the use of energy has been central to the functioning and development of human societies. But during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, humanity learned how to harness the highly-concentrated forms of energy contained within fossil fuels. These provided the power that drove the

3.1 Doctors: the ‘Great-I-Am’

We pin a lot of hopes on doctors. We expect them to know all that is relevant about the classification and treatment of diseases. We expect them to be able to make us better, and to give us an indication of what will happen to us next. There are strong pressures on doctors to respond to this expectation – to be knowledgeable and confident, to set themselves apart from ordinary mortals. Lesley Mackay is a researcher who, in 1989–90, carried out an extensive study involving over a hundred i

5.3.3 Contingency theories

Contingency theories are based on the idea that there is no single best style of leadership but that the most effective style depends upon the circumstances. The aspects of the circumstances identified as significant are:

  • the leader's characteristics and style (thus absorbing the two earlier theories).

  • the subordinates' expectations and experience.

  • the nature of the task and the organisational environment.

Where will the decisions be made that will result in meaningful action on climate change, and who will make them stick? Following climate change politics in the media can give the impression that most of the action on climate change is going on between national decision makers in international forums. It is important to keep in mind that these forums have resulted from persistent pressure from a combination of grassroots environmental activists and a global network of science and policy exper

4.5 Technological change

In both industries the fall in prices was driven by radical changes in the production of the products. How might we investigate the technological changes and the changes in quality that occurred in both industries simultaneously with the drastic fall in prices? There are various methods used by economists to measure technological change. Some methods focus on the ‘inputs’ into the innovation process, such as the spending on research and development by firms. But this is not ideal as it do

Interface boundary between h-BN and Si3N4 grains
The micrograph shows a regularly stepped interface boundary between h-BN (precipitate) and Si3N4 grains (within a silicon nitride particulate-reinforced silicon carbide composite). The occurrence of BN inclusions results from the introduction of colloidal BN into the hot isostatic pressing process. They are formed from B2O3 present as a thin surface film on the BN particles in the barrier layer. B2O3 will be molten during the pressing process and will diffuse rapidly into the powder compact and

2.2 Monitoring as control

To control you need a plan that indicates what should happen and information that tells you what is actually happening. This is monitoring activity. By comparing the information about actual progress against the plan, you will be able to identify any variations.

Control is an important part of project management. It involves:

  • reporting the progress of the project against the plan;
