5.3 Social institutions Of course, the extent of agreement about meaning can be highly variable: from the ephemeral (a certain style of clothing may come to stand for a shared attitude among a small group of teenagers for a short period) to the more profound (such as the idea of ‘a market’ or ‘marriage’). Sociologists refer to these more profound shared meanings as institutions. In this sense, an institution is a persistently reproduced social pattern that is relatively self-sustaining. Howe

Solar System!
ࡁn introduction to our solar system: the planets, our Sun and our Moon. Students begin by learning the history and engineering of space travel. They make simple rockets to acquire a basic understanding Newton's third law of motion. They explore energy transfer concepts and use renewable solar energy for cooking. They see how engineers design tools, equipment and spacecraft to go where it is too far and too dangerous for humans. They explore the Earth's water cycle, and gravity as applied to or
"Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies, Fall 2007"

Linear function graph display
An interactive applet that allows the user to graphically explore the properties of a linear functions. Specifically, it is designed to foster an intuitive understanding of the effects of changing the two coefficients in the function y=ax+b. The applet shows a large graph of a quadratic (ax + b) and has two slider controls, one each for the coefficients a and b. As the sliders are moved, the graph is redrawn in real time illustrating the effects of these variations. Applet can be enlarged to ful
The Scientific Method: An Introduction Using Reaction Time
Reaction time has many advantages for the introduction of the scientific method--the subject is familiar, many experiments are possible, and students enjoy competition. In our Introductory Biology courses, our students formulate and test a hypothesis about reaction time. We use Kosinski's Reaction Time software, that records reaction times and then analyzes them statistically using the chi-square median test. Students then write a paper that either rejects or fails to reject their null hypothesi

Mount Tempura: Potential Volcanic Eruption Analysis
This three minute shows how scientist think that Mount Tempura will throw so much ash into the air when it erupted that it could change the earth's climate. Yellowstone National Park is a huge volcano that
explodes every 600,000 years. The last time it blew was 640,000 years ago. This is a good video to show students to show how volcanic eruptions impact the Earth.

3.2 Behavioural approaches Behavioural therapies are based on principles of classical conditioning and operant conditioning (the latter being more properly referred to as behaviour modification therapy). Operant conditioning is about the presentation of a reinforcement being dependent (contingent) on the appearance of a given behaviour. Based on this idea, Skinner (1953) suggested that sometimes ‘abnormal’ behaviour is the result of bad contingency management, where inappropriate behaviours have

The subject treats such aspects of thinking as vision, language, learning, reasoning, memory, consciousness, ideals, emotions, and personality. Ideas incorporate psychology, artificial intelligence, and computer science to resolve theoretical issues such as whole vs. parts, structural vs. functional descriptions, declarative vs. procedural representations, symbolic vs. con
A group of 60 Auburn students recently took part in the LeaderShape Institute at the 4-H Center in Columbiana. As a part of the experience, the students visited Pratt City, a Birmingham suburb and one of the areas hit hardest by the April 27 tornadoes. A number of the students who participated in the program are from the Birmingham area and were deeply moved by the devastation they witnessed.
Our Street Smarts reporter asked Huskies how they would spend their last day if the world was ending tomorrow.
