Conduction, Convection, and Radiation
With the help of simple, teacher-led demonstration activities, students learn the basic concepts of heat transfer by means of conduction, convection, and radiation. Students then apply these concepts as they work in teams to solve two problems. One problem requires that they maintain the warm temperature of one soda can filled with water at approximately body temperature, and the other problem is to cause an identical soda can of warm water to cool as much as possible during the same thirty-minu

Venus Transit Time Lapse Standing on the slopes of Medicine Lake Volcano, CA at chimney crater in the relatively small shadow cast by the moon, the rare coincidence in the orbit of the moon and sun was captured by Mike Krawczynski (EAPS PhD 2011), who studies both terrestrial and lunar volcanics. The time lapse video spans 185 individual frames taken over approximately 2 hours. Mike Krawczynski is a currently a postdoctoral scholar at Case Western Reserve University in experimental geochemistry.
Academia, Industry or Both? Are you trying to decide between academia and industry? David Weitz, Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard; Lita Nelsen, Director of the MIT Technology Licensing Office; and Annalisa Weigel, Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, will be sharing their experience and insight on making this decision. Modeling the Arctic Ocean - MITgcm on Ice Temperature in the Arctic region has been rising at approximately twice the global average rate in the past 100 years (Solomon et al., Technical Summary, IPCC 2007). To understand the effect of warming on the Arctic sea ice and ocean circulation, An Nguyen and colleagues simulated a data-constrained coupled ocean and sea ice state estimate at high horizontal resolution. One area of great interest is the Chukchi Sea where the source of an important water mass, the Western Arctic upper haloclin
