A Scottish Education Department (SED) consultative paper enjoined the inspectorate to ‘pay particular attention in their inspection of schools to the extent to which schools and education authorities have had regard to the national curricular policies†1.2 Hints before you start Understanding the Equity Premium Puzzle Visual Images in Social Sciences
How do social scientists use visual images?
What does a picture or image tell you? This unit is an introduction to analysing and interpreting photographs as social data. Who controls what the image is saying? You will look at how photographs provide visual evidence and how they can illustrate and support our ideas about society. This material is from our archive and is an adapted extract from Introducing the social sciences (DD100) which is no longer taught by The 1.1 Why look at photographs? By helping you to respond to visual cues the unit aims for you to develop your understanding of these memorials, not only as memorials, but as artefacts or 'made objects'. It does this through consideration of such factors as the location of the monument; its function and purpose; its symbolism or realism; use of materials and o Acknowledgements Comparing modelled and observed temperature 1.1.1 Assessing your current level of knowledge 1.1.6 Keeping up-to-date

The media is being used as a convenient scapegoat for the development of eating disorders. This is the view of Professor Kenneth Nunn from Sydney University, Australia who will be speaking at the ninth in a series of debates on topical issues in psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry.
He will argue that evidence suggests that the onset of an eating disorder has little to do with the media and everything to do with individual biological and psychological vulnerabilities.

Handling statistical data is an essential part of psychological research. However, many people find the idea of using statistics, and especially statistical software packages, extremely daunting. This unit takes a step-by-step approach to statistics software through seven interactive activities. No statistics software is needed.
Professor Constantanides is one of the most prominent and creative research scholars in the field of financial economics, in particular of theories of asset and derivatives pricing. He will present theoretical and empirical research on three classes of generalizations of the standard neoclassical model and will discuss their contribution towards a better understanding of equity risk premium.

Designed products surround us all and range from bus tickets to buildings. This unit focuses firmly on usability and the increasingly important phenomenon of people-centred design. It aims to inform consumers of design (i.e., all of us) about this crucial characteristic of design. The unit is derived from the Open University course T211 on Design and Designing, but as well as stimulating interest in areas of concern for producers of design it might also provide an introduction to engineering, ma
This unit provides an introduction to global warming. We will be considering the history of global warming by looking at the pattern of ice ages and analyisis of recorded temperatures. We will aim to gather meaningful information from this data. We will briefly assess the impact and influence of humans on global warming and, finally, we will examine climate models and how to predict future changes.
This unit will help you to identify and use information in maths and statistics, whether for your work, study or personal purposes. Experiment with some of the key resources in this subject area, and learn about the skills which will enable you to plan searches for information, so you can find what you are looking for more easily. Discover the meaning of information quality, and learn how to evaluate the information you come across. You will also be introduced to the many different ways of organ
