The Sound of Jelly Wobbling
The sound of a jelly wobbling has been recorded for the first time ever in a soundproof chamber at UCL. The recording is being turned into a soundtrack for an architectural jelly banquet to be hosted at UCL at 8pm on 4 July 2008. The event, run by Bompas and Parr as part of the London Festival of Architecture, will see a troupe of dancers deliver a spoon-based performance to the soundtrack sampled from wobbling jellies and a delicious aroma of strawberries, and will feature jelly wrestling and

Look at the Moon even with the unaided eye, and you will see that it has dark patches on a paler background (Figure 2). This simple observation picks out the two distinct types of crust on the Moon. The paler areas are the lunar highlands, and the darker areas are the lunar 'seas' or maria (singular: mare). Both the highlands an

3 A global view of Earth history

Figure 3, below, shows how the Earth's continents have drifted across the globe over the past 550 million years. This is a reconstruction of continental configurations of the Earth's landmasses during the Phanerozoic Eon. Note how northern and southern parts of the British Isles (red) were dispersed over two continents/tectonic plates until the end of the Devonian (a–d), and that all the landmasses formed one supercontinent during the Permo-Triassic (f).

2.4 Ancient sources

As you have seen, exploring the Classical world is an interdisciplinary pursuit. Perhaps the most immediately obvious aspect of this interdisciplinary approach is that you will confront different kinds of ancient sources, often simultaneously, since one of them by itself may not be sufficient for answering a particular question you may have. Quite apart from whether a source is ancient or modern, the different disciplines that make up Classical Studies use different kinds of source material.

1.1 Conductor–insulator–semiconductor structures

A forensic examination of the inside of any silicon chip would reveal a miniature network of metal tracks criss-crossing on several levels, separated by insulating layers of silicon dioxide and periodically stitched down to the underlying tracks and the underlying silicon. Down in the silicon proper there is an intricate pattern of islands of p-type material in pockets of n-type material and vice versa. The precision and regularity of the patterns of different materials tells of a highly soph

1.3.7 Summary

  • We can learn to use writing of all sorts as evidence by practising how to interpret it and by becoming aware of the conventions attached to its primary purpose for example as personal testimony, journalism, commercially produced material, such as market research and academic writing as well as material produced specifically through research such as interview data.

  • When approaching a piece of writing:

This class explores sound and what can be done with it. Sources are recorded from students' surroundings - sampled and electronically generated (both analog and digital). Assignments include composing with the sampled sounds, feedback, and noise, using digital signal processing (DSP), convolution, algorithms, and simple mixing. The class focuses on sonic and compositional aspects rather than technology, math, or acoustics, though these are examined in varying detail. Students complete weekly com

2.5.3 Consistency

A common problem with sentences is not making all the parts match up. What is wrong with this sentence of Philip's, for example?

So therefore woman began to long for the urban or city way of living, if even for a short period so that they could deploy the art of socializing…

The mistake is that ‘woman’ should be followed by ‘she’ not ‘they’. ‘Woman’ is singular, whereas

2.2.2 Precision

Measuring the same sample should give the same result every time if the equipment is precise. In practice, the information displayed by a measuring device can depend on several factors (such as temperature and humidity) and can drift slightly over time. Nevertheless, during the time it takes to complete a measurement sequence, all measurements ought to remain within a specified, small margin of error, often marked on the equipment.
