Mathematical models: from sundials to number engines
Since the dawn of civilisation, humans have used everyday materials to create mathematical models of the world around them. This album explores the ancient Greeks' astrolabe as a model of the skies; the sundial, to tell the time; Babylonian clay tablets to record wages and trading of sheep; wooden tallies for bulk-buying beer, the Incas' use of knots and string, and the sophisticated number-engine invented by Charles Babbage. This material forms part of The Open University course MST121 Using ma

HST.161 Molecular Biology and Genetics in Modern Medicine (MIT)
This course provides a foundation for understanding the relationship between molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and medicine. It develops explicit connections between basic research, medical understanding, and the perspective of patients. Principles of human genetics are reviewed. We translate clinical understanding into analysis at the level of the gene, chromosome and molecule; we cover the concepts and techniques of molecular biology and genomics, an

4.1 Dealing with risk

Projects are high-risk activities, and it is in the early stages that uncertainty is greatest. Some of this uncertainty can be removed during design and planning, but in practice a great deal may remain. Risks can be ranked according to their probability and likely impact, and a risk log can be kept detailing this information. Throughout the progress of the project you will need to review your risk log, to check whether any risks have become either more or less probable, and whether any new r

3.6 Design considerations for AFM probes

AFMs have proved so useful in so many areas of science and engineering that they are now to be found in most universities and many manufacturing companies. The making of probes for these instruments is no longer a cottage industry, partly because of the sheer numbers involved, but also because of the need for consistency of performance from probe to probe. This requires precise shaping, both of the tip itself and of the cantilever on which it is mounted. The quality of image obtained from an

2.5.3 Consistency

A common problem with sentences is not making all the parts match up. What is wrong with this sentence of Philip's, for example?

So therefore woman began to long for the urban or city way of living, if even for a short period so that they could deploy the art of socializing…

The mistake is that ‘woman’ should be followed by ‘she’ not ‘they’. ‘Woman’ is singular, whereas

1 Genetic medicine: dreams and realities

Genetics can be used in medicine to confirm a previous or make a fresh diagnosis, or predict a disorder likely to occur in future. At the moment, that is often all that can be done. The so-called ‘diagnostic therapeutic gap’ is one immediate problem for us to deal with. When the only options on offer after a genetic test are to terminate a pregnancy, or prepare to deal with the disease as best you can, some of the dilemmas of new genetic knowledge are sharper.

Genetic testing is onl
