HIV/AIDS TRENDS; Attention to AIDS wanes, but illness is still rampant
Arkansas' leaders are mistaken if they think the epidemic of acquired immune-deficiency syndrome is under control, according to advocates for AIDS support groups. They expressed concern in an appearance before a legislative committee that authorities have become apathetic about the illness again. The Arkansas AIDS Drug Assistance Program and Jefferson Comprehensive Care Inc. appealed to the joint legislative Minority Health Subcommittee for increased funding and new laws.

The Role of Community Advisory Boards: Involving Communities in the Informed Consent Process
Ethical research involving human subjects mandates that individual informed consent be obtained from research participants or from surrogates when participants are not able to consent for themselves. The existing requirements for informed consent assume that all study participants have personal autonomy; fully comprehend the purpose, risks, and benefits of the research; and volunteer for projects that disclose all relevant information. Yet contemporary examples of lapses in the individual informe

A First Course in Complex Analysis
These are the lecture notes of a one-semester undergraduate course which we taught at SUNY Binghamton. For many of our students, Complex Analysis is their first rigorous analysis (if not mathematics) class they take, and these notes reflect this very much. We tried to rely on as few concepts from real analysis as possible. In particular, series and sequences are treated "from scratch." This also has the (maybe disadvantageous) consequence that power series are introduced very late in the course.

Self-Reported Experiences of Racial Discrimination and Black–White Differences in Preterm and Low-
Objectives. We examined the effects of self-reported experiences of racial discrimination on Black–White differences in preterm (less than 37 weeks gestation) and low-birthweight (less than 2500 g) deliveries. Methods. Using logistic regression models, we analyzed data on 352 births among women enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study. Results. Among Black women, 50% of those with preterm deliveries and 61% of those with low-birthweight infants reported having

AMA Apologizes To Blacks For Past Racial Inequality
Transplant surgeon Clive Callender has hurtful memories of being the only black doctor at medical meetings in the 1970s, met with stark silence when he pleaded for better access to transplant organs for blacks. So when the American Medical Association formally apologized Thursday for more than a century of policies that excluded blacks from a group long considered the voice of American doctors, it was belated, but still welcome.

Barbershops become urban community health centers

Disparity By Geography The War on Drugs in America’s Cities
The “war on drugs,” beginning in the 1980s, represented a profound shift in the way in which the United States practiced law enforcement, and ushered in a new era in American policing. Overall, between 1980 and 2003, the number of drug offenders in prison or jail increased by 1100% from 41,100 in 1980 to 493,800 in 2003,2 with a remarkable rise in arrests concentrated in African American communities. This precipitous escalation began as the result of a tangible shift in law enforcement pract

Characterization of adhesives at room and elevated temperatures
Recent interest in advanced materials has paved the way for exploring joining options besides the traditional mechanical or thermal methods such as riveting or welding. Because of the availability of highly advanced materials, mass production rates and demands for more aesthetic products, adhesive bonding is being used in more applications. Today, interstate signs, semi-trailer panels, aircraft structures, and many other commonly used products are adhesively bonded. Some of the common misconcept

Morphological variation of the proximal femur in selected skeletal remains
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the structural variation of the proximal femur in human skeletal samples. The goal was to investigate and further describe the morphology of the proximal femur through quantitative observation. Subsets of measurements were used to calculate platymeric indices, which demonstrate the presence or absence of platymeria in a population. Metric analyses of the femur were also used to study size and shape differences in populations for indications of sexual dimo

The end and the beginning:a model for analyzing visual/verbal news broadcasts of protest coverage
This project brings together two areas of prior research: framing and visual rhetoric. Framing as it relates to news coverage of protests constitutes the core theoretical foundation. In using prior research by McLeod, Gitlin, and Lee, we see how news coverage can potentially bias an audience against protestors. However, this research focuses extensively on newspapers or transcripts of televised news. Consequently, by combining visual theories like semiotics, gestalt, and film theory into a visua
