Teaching 'Ideas about Science': case studies from the classroom
In this paper, we report work undertaken with a group of 11 teachers over a period of a year to teach aspects of the nature of science. The teachers, who taught science in a mix of elementary, junior high, and high schools, were asked to teach components of the nature of science for which consensus had been established using a Delphi study in the first phase of the project. Data were collected through field notes, videos, teachers’ reflective diaries, instruments that measured their understand
Sustainable Development and Management of Ski Resorts
Gian Paolo Zini offers a comparative analysis of the Wasatch front and the Alps with regard to sustainable development in both regions.
Technical Paper 6A - The Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) Project: Characteristics
As part of the study all pre-schools were assessed using an observational assessment known as the Early Childhood Rating Scale, (ECERS-R) plus an extension to it (ECERS-E) based upon the Desirable Learning Outcomes (QCA 1996). ECERS provides measures of the quality of education and care which children receive in settings plus some measures of facilities relating to facilities and human resources. Completion of the ECERS profile required one day of observation plus talking to staff about aspects
A changing climate for educational research? The role of research capability-building
As part of the Teaching and Learning Research Programme, the ESRC have funded a totally new kind of project, which is likely to be watched with interest by others in social science more generally. This Research Capacity-Building (RCB) project (grant number L139251106) is an innovative attempt to invigorate an entire research field. Among its aims are to support and encourage: the management of complex projects, a widening of methodological approaches, the further combination of different approac
The RCBN Consultation Exercise: Stakeholder Report
One of the early objectives of the ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP) Research Capacity Building Network has been to undertake an extensive consultation exercise in order to identify the priorities for research capacity-building and to generate a database of expertise from across the UK educational research community. This report provides an account of the first element of the consultation exercise, interviews with twenty-five key stakeholders each representing the major consti
11.208 Introduction to Computers in Public Management II (MIT)
Second of two modules facilitating a basic understanding of computing in planning and public management. Students develop problem-solving skills using computer-based tools for "what-if" analyses. Emphasis on spatial analysis using geographic information systems and database query tools.
2.23 Hydrofoils and Propellers (MIT)
This course develops the theory and design of hydrofoil sections, including lifting and thickness problems for sub-cavitating sections, unsteady flow problems, and computer-aided design of low drag cavitation-free sections. It also covers lifting line and lifting surface theory with applications to hydrofoil craft, rudder, control surface, propeller and wind turbine rotor design. Other topics include computer-aided design of wake adapted propellers; steady and unsteady propeller thrust and torqu

As districts struggle with dwindling budgets and staggering layoffs, schools are finding it harder to sustain and further develop programs for gifted and talented students. Now, more than ever, teachers, administrators, and parents must work together to meet the ne
Aircraft are complex products comprised of many subsystems which must meet demanding customer and operational lifecycle value requirements. This course adopts a holistic view of the aircraft as a system, covering: basic systems engineering; cost and weight estimation; basic aircraft performance; safety and reliability; lifecycle topics; aircraft subsystems; risk analysis and management; and system realization. Small student teams "retrospectively analyze" an existing aircraft cove
This course focuses on financing tools and program models to support local economic development. It includes an overview of private capital markets and financing sources to understand capital market imperfections that constrain economic development; business accounting; financial statement analysis; federal economic development programs; and public finance tools. Program models covered include revolving loan funds, guarantee programs, venture capital funds, bank holding companies, community deve
Dr. Crane presented this lecture at the USAWC 238th Army Birthday Celebration on June 14, 2013 at the Army Heritage and Education Center.
This is a graduate course on the design and analysis of algorithms, covering several advanced topics not studied in typical introductory courses on algorithms. It is especially designed for doctoral students interested in theoretical computer science.
