Welcome to the OOI
For one and a half months in the summer of 2013, the crew of the Research Vessel Thompson and a full complement of scientists, engineers, and students applied their collective expertise to the complex task of installing the Regional Scale Nodes—the UW-led component of the Ocean Observatories Initiative, the National Science Foundation's huge technological undertaking that will enable new approaches in ocean research and exploration.

It would be fair to say, in a spirit of understatement, that the First World War served as the occasion for a certain amount of poetry. Catherine W. Reilly, in her groundbreaking English Poetry of the First World War: A … Continue reading
"The SEP programme strengthened my position as a leader and helped me get through what have been some pretty challenging times economically," Philip Stockton(SEP65) shares his thoughts on the School's Senior Executive Programme in a new CNN advert.
Chairman of CBI and BT Group PLC, Sir Michael Rake, shares his thoughts on the subject of the panel "The future of British business: practical priorities for practitioners and policy makers" at London Business School's Global Leadership Summit 2013.
Students can beat the summer heat by working inside laboratories and engaging in faculty-mentored research through the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities. CURO student junior ecology major Emilie Morris has been working in Dr. Sonia Altizer's lab with monarch butterflies.
Skid-Steer Loader Safety. This film explores causes and prevention of deaths on skid-steer loaders. Topics include being struck by lift arms and attachments; being crushed by tipping or falling loaders; being run over or run into; and being struck by falling objects. What would persuade the Canadian ambassador to jump from a window of one of Cairo’s tallest buildings to certain death? In 1956, Cambridge educated, highly respected diplomat, Herbert Norman, was hand picked by Canadian Primer Minister, Lester B. Pearson, to be his point man in Egypt during the Suez Crisis. Pearson later won the Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to the peac
This paper presents a pilot study to analyze the role of problem solving expertise (PSE) and computational tool proficiency (CTP) of expert and novice architects in the ideation process within a distributed cognition environment. To analyze PSE, we studied the frequency of occurrence of unique problem solving tasks per limited commitment mode (LCM) revisit. We also devised a quantitative measure for analyzing CTP based on the frequency of unique and normally distributed modeling activities per d
Asset prices have risen back to levels that match fundamentals, but returns are not as high as they used to be.

Architecture has for too long focused on the presentation of pristine objects and the presentation in drawing form. A critical understanding of the field, however, necessitates a reevaluation of the roles of the process involved in the production of building. Rather than emphasizing surface appearances, an architecture rooted in process aims ultimately at revealing the fundamental and deep structures inherent within the making of architecture. One of the primary tasks of the process is to provok
The following contribution discusses the possible consequences of the concept of City Simulators and Digital City Models, which can be obtained from a previously conducted user inquiry in an Urban Planning Department. At the core of the examination are the additional benefit (added value) and the increasing acceptance of digital planning techniques by its users which can be made possible by the implementation of user requirements in City Simulators. Various experiments for cooperative planning i
Virtual reality and cyberspace are extended spaces of the mind different from, yet related to, the spaces of fiction and ancient myth. These earlier spaces reveal how electronic media, too, may come to define our selves and our culture. Indeed, a better understanding of how we use space to think can lead to the design of better information environments. This paper will describe a range of traditional narrative spaces, revealing their varied relationships with the physical world. It will demonstr
The present study aims to foreground and investigate computational aspects of the design process of Mario Botta?s single-family house in Breganzona. Through the selected case, it mainly addresses the research question, ?what are the computational aspects of the examined design process and what is the nature of such aspects?? or, otherwise formulated, ?what aspects of such a design process could be formalised, and thus, represented or explained in computational terms?? The study primarily involve
In the north american academic context a workshop is different from a paper session in that it is simply an opportunity to exchange ideas and to raise questions among colleagues who can bring to bear in their discussion various points of view and experiences otherwise unavailable.
This paper focuses on the visualization of historical architecture. The application of new Computer-Aided- Architectural-Design techniques for visualization on micro computers provides a technique for reconstructing and analyzing architectural objects from the past. The pilot project describes a case study in which the historical transformation of a town will be analyzed by using three- dimensional CAD models in combination with bitmap textures. The transformation of the historic town will be vi
