TALAT Lecture 1203: Phase Diagrams
This lecture aims at developing a qualitative understanding of binary phase diagrams by reference to the model systems Cu-Ni, Ni-Pt, Au-Ni and Ag-Cu, and also by reference to the Phase Rule. It applies the basic concepts of phase diagrams to binary aluminium alloys; it also aims at extending the discussion to an outline of ternary phase diagrams, and at showing how a so-called pseudo-binary section can be applied with benefit to the Al-Mg-Si system for alloys balanced in Mg2Si.

4.6 Systems engineering: the recent development of a discipline

The recent development of systems engineering can be dated from two events. First, following the lead of the US Department of Defense and its introduction of standards for contractors, systems engineering was taken up by companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin and, in the UK, British Aerospace, Marconi and the Lucas Group. Second, in August 1990, a group of individuals interested in systems engineering met in Seattle (Box 10 – extract from a paper presented at the International Committee

2.2 Defining wellbeing

Wellbeing has become popular among policy makers as a generic term that embraces physical, mental and emotional health. Is this simply a matter of changing fashions in terminology or does it reflect particular assumptions about what it means to be healthy? Moreover, does the term have particular meanings when used in relation to young people? In this section we will analyse current ideas about what constitutes wellbeing for young people, and work towards producing a critical framework for und

How (Not) to Read an Academic Article
Dave Harris
Producer (requires Internet Explorer). This is a demonstration of two approaches to reading an academic article. The first one involves lots of detailed note-taking and slow patient reading: I think the video gives some idea of the tedious nature of this approach, as does the 'alienated' commentary. The second approach demonstrates much more brisk reading for sense and understanding. I tried to 'think aloud' as I did these tasks. I also illustrate on PowerPoint some relevant ch

Art and architecture
The Louvre was designed to house a great art collection for the people of France. Was there a plan from the outset to build a canon of work where the relationships between artists, their origins, their schools and faiths could be traced across centuries? And how did architect I.M.Pei persuade President Mitterrand to allow a pyramid to be built at the Louvre? The album goes on to explore how architecture can reflect relationships between different traditions. Two great buildings, Palladio’s chu

7.5 Summary of Section 7

  1. The equilibrium constant of a reaction is fixed at any particular temperature. It depends only on the natures of the initial reactants and the final products; what happens as reactants change into products has no effect on the equilibrium constant or position of equilibrium.

  2. The rate of a chemical reaction is affected both by the temperature and by the pathway (reaction mechanism) through which reactants change into products. This pathway c

This study is a part of a licentiate thesis on "Functional kitchen for the Vietnamese cooking way"at the Department of Architecture and Development studies, Lund University. The issues it is dealing with are: (1) Inadequacy of kitchen design in the apartment buildings in Hanoi, where the kitchen is often designed as a mere cooking place - other parts of the food making process are not given any attention. (2) Lack of standard dimensional and planning criteria for functional kitchen which can ser

5.6 Public understanding and perception of science

Everyday reality presents itself not just through the senses but intersubjectively (Berger and Luckmann, 1966) – that is, we form meanings about the world because we talk to others about what we perceive. Scientific knowledge is also formed intersubjectively through being shared within a community of scientists – a community of practice which stipulates what constitutes legitimate scientific knowledge, and validates the epistemological assumptions made by its own traditions.
