There are two other surfaces that can be obtained by identifying both pairs of opposite edges of a rectangle. In one of these, shown in Figure 31, we first identify the edges AB and A'B', labelled a, in the direction shown by the arrowheads. This gives us a cylinder, as before. We then try to ident

4.1 Overview

One of the most surprising aspects of quantum physics is the ability of particles to pass through regions that they are classically forbidden from entering. This is the phenomenon of quantum-mechanical tunnelling that was mentioned in Session 1.

In Session 4 we first demonstrate the phenomenon of tunnelling with the ai

The chapter by Teesson et al. (2002) will have presented you with a clearly written initial orientation to addiction. The article introduced addiction at several different levels of explanation in what the authors term a ‘biopsy chosocial model’ (p. 47). Such an integrated model is at the heart of the approach tak

2.2 Evaluating web resources

One of the good things about the Web is also one of its drawbacks – anybody can publish anything. This means that the Web is an amazing source of information and is full of fascinating resources.

However, in order to get to useful information you may have to work your way through lots of irrelevant material. Even when you think you have found something relevant, how do you know it is reliable, and how can you judge the quality, accuracy and bias of what you find?

3.5.3 Single participant interventions

A single participant intervention study, studies the effects of an intervention in the case of one person, with the aim of establishing those elements of the intervention which would work with the majority of people. This is because the method assumes that in all important respects, all human beings are the same, and the effects of the intervention in one case should be the same in all cases. It is a method that belongs to objectivity.

2.2.3 Reading graphs and charts: getting started

Graphs and charts ought to be easy to read, since the main point of turning numbers into diagrams is to bring out their meaning more clearly. However, they are abstract representations that attempt to summarise certain aspects of the world in a condensed form. Consequently, they require a degree of mental effort on your part to bridge the gap between the formal pictures on the page and the aspects of ‘reality’ they represent. It is important to approach graphs and diagrams caref

4.1 Overview

For a small country whose population has never been much in excess of five million, Scotland seems to have more than its fair share of famous men and women. Native Scots or those descended directly from them have been the recipients of some 11 per cent of all the Nobel Prizes that have been awarded.

In this section of the OpenLearn Scotland collection, we look in detail at the lives and work of four great Scots: John Napier, James Clerk Maxwell, Robert Owen and David Hume.

Digitizing Architecture: Formalization and Content
CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process.
