7.5 Materials costs

There will be many categories of materials, supplies and consumables used in a project. Once again, the materials that are in constant use and easily and ‘freely’ available in an organisation might be overlooked in costing the project. For example, it is easy to assume that stationary will be available in much the same way as it is for day-to-day work. However, a project is a bounded activity, and if you are to understand the full cost of achieving the outcomes, you will need to know how

Holocaust survivor recalls the help given to the marchers by the inhabitants of Domotzlice
http://www.yadvashem.org/volary Holocaust survivor Mary Robinson recalls the help given to the marchers by the inhabitants of Domotzlice On 20 January 1945, approximately 1000 female Jewish prisoners were evacuated from the Schlesiersee (today Sława) camp in Upper Silesia, western Poland, a region annexed to Germany. These women were forced on a death march in a southwesterly direction. On the way, the prisoners passed through other camps, and more women were added to the march. On 5 May 1945,

Making Implants Stronger and Last Longer with CU-REPRO
Replacements like knee and hip implants are important for many people- but they often wear out or react negatively when implanted. Dr. John DesJardins is trying to change this with his creative inquiry program. 1.3.5 Corporate connections

As I mentioned in Section 2, what was happening in the factories of overseas contractors was said to have appeared remote to most, if not all, the chief executive officers of the clothing multinationals in the 1980s. Overseas contractors were selected on the basis of market price, quality and reliability, not on whether forced or child labour happened to be employed to stitch the product together. However, all that changed in the early 1990s when the geographical ties between the big retailer

11.237 Gender and Race, Work, and Public Policy (MIT)
This course provides an analytic framework for understanding the roles that gender and race play in defining the work worlds of women and men in our society, including ways in which gender intersects with race and class. The course examines specific workplace-related policies through a gender/race lens, including welfare policy, comparable worth, affirmative action, parental leave policy, child care policy and working time policies. Students are required to investigate ways in which these polici

3.3 Quantitative and qualitative evidence

The Tables above provide official quantitative evidence: evidence, data or information which is expressed in numerical terms. On the face of it, this clearly shows that recorded crime increased significantly throughout the twentieth century, albeit with some ‘dips’ in recent years. Common sense is confirmed. But there are problems with these data. Remember, we are looking here at crimes recorded by the police. Do you think that all crimes are recorded? There might be different reas

Digitizing Architecture: Formalization and Content
CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process. 4.12.1 Time

Delegated legislation is far quicker to introduce than an Act of Parliament. This can be an advantage in instances when emergencies or unforeseen problems require laws to be changed. The use of delegated legislation also saves parliamentary time. The detail of the delegated legislation can be dealt with by the appropriate minister, leaving Parliament as a whole more time to focus on the general principles of the enabling Act.

2.2 The shift from manufacturing to services in industrialised economies

There was a profound restructuring of economic activity in ‘older’ industrialised countries in the last quarter of the twentieth century from manufacturing to service activities. There are several reasons for this restructuring. First, the long-established industrialised countries such as Germany, the USA, Japan and the UK have faced increasingly intense competition as more countries have industrialised. Second, productivity, or output per worker, has increased in manufacturing industries

1 Structural devices: a static role

The superb manufacturing techniques of microelectronics enable designers of integrated circuits to exercise complete control over the electrical characteristics of each component, such as a transistor, by specifying the shapes and sizes of their active regions. Using photolithographic mask-drawing software on their workstations, they can copy and paste blocks of identical devices all over the chip, knowing that when the design is finally realised in silicon, this extreme uniformity wil

1.1.3 Time

The recommended duration of an aerobic exercise session is dependent on several factors, such as the participant’s goals and fitness levels, and the intensity of exercise. Obviously, the higher the intensity of the exercise, the shorter will be its duration. As a general guide the ACSM recommends between twenty and sixty minutes of aerobic exercise, which can be undertaken either continuously – i.e. all at once – or intermittently – i.e. in shorter bouts accumulated during the day (AC

Job interviews
Job Interviews is one of several Futures workbooks which help students choose and prepare for their careers. Like the other workbooks in the series you can dip in and out doing the exercises which are most relevant to you. You might want to include the exercises or the output in your personal development plan or e-portfolio. Interviews are still the most commonly used method for assessing a person’s suitability for a job. In the UK 99 per cent of employers use selection interviews to recruit
