4.8 Not everyone is participating

It can be annoying if there are some people in your tutor group who don't participate in discussions. You may feel that this is unfair, or that you are doing more than your fair share of the work.

There's often a minority of people who don't join in at all, for a variety of reasons – pressure of personal circumstances, illness, shyness, or deliberate decision. And different people may be at different stages in the course. A benefit of studying online is that you can fit your studying

Experiments as Modus Operandi
Architecture has for too long focused on the presentation of pristine objects and the presentation in drawing form. A critical understanding of the field, however, necessitates a reevaluation of the roles of the process involved in the production of building. Rather than emphasizing surface appearances, an architecture rooted in process aims ultimately at revealing the fundamental and deep structures inherent within the making of architecture. One of the primary tasks of the process is to provok

4.4 Summary

In this section, you have had the opportunity to work on some mathematical activities yourself. This should have enabled you to:

  • reflect on how you approach mathematics and what helps you to work on a piece of mathematics;

  • remind yourself of those pieces of mathematics that you can work at successfully;

  • identify aspects of mathematics that you can strengthen as you work through the later blocks of this course;

The Civil War: A Explanation by a Historian
A talking head video with some good statistics in the 1:34 video. Good for advanced students. Offers insights into the effects of the war, too, but mainly a weak tool for the study of this war.

1 Maxwell's greatest triumph

This course presents Maxwell's greatest triumph – the prediction that electromagnetic waves can propagate vast distances through empty space and the realisation that light is itself an electromagnetic wave. Visible light has a very narrow range of wavelengths, but this tells us more about the sensitivity of our eyes than about the nature of electromagnetic radiation. A few years after Maxwell's death other types of electromagnetic radiation, including radio waves, X-rays and gamma rays, wer

Governing Refugees: Justice, Order, and Legal Plauralism on the Thai-Burma Border [Book event]
Seminar given on 29 October 2014 by Dr Kirsten McConnachie (Refugee Studies Centre), part of the RSC Michaelmas term 2014 Public Seminar Series. Refugee camps are imbued in the public imagination with assumptions of anarchy, danger and refugee passivity. 'Governing Refugees: Justice, Order and Legal Pluralism' marshals empirical data and ethnographic detail to challenge such assumptions, arguing that refugee camps should be recognised as spaces where social capital can not only survive, but thr

5.5 Science in the Scottish Enlightenment

This course is concerned with science in Scotland, one of the most dynamic centres of Enlightenment thinking. Writers speak of the mid-eighteenth century as Scotland's ‘Golden Age’. In order to get a flavour of this age, it is necessary to take a very broad view of what we mean by ‘science’. Staying within the boundaries recognised by modern science faculties misses most of what is distinctive about eighteenth-century Scotland. The interconnections and cross-fertilisation between disc

Introduction

You are probably aware that most children live with a parent or parents, with siblings and relatives and with family pets in the family home. But many children do not live with their parents or even with their families. Some may be living in different settings such as a boarding school because they or their parents want them to be there. Others may live with relatives or friends. Some will live with foster or adoptive families or in residential homes with a range of different carers. Whatever

Creativity and VR Use
Creativity with its various processes is involved in all design actions. Creativity used in architectural design is different than creativity in other domains. However, creativity in general with its related cognition processes has no general theory. This research proposes certain activities of initial architectural design phases in which the role of activity is important. The research proceeds to present a case study of two architectural design studios in which a VR environment is employed in o

2.12 The future of the therapeutic relationship

As discussed earlier in this extract, therapeutic relationships are subject to constant review and reinterpretation. As the culture changed, the predominant shift in health care was away from paternalistic forms of relationships based on professional expertise towards partnership models in which the patient has more rights but also more responsibilities. This final section looks to the future and considers some of the factors that can impact on therapeutic relationships in CAM.
