5.2 Devolution in Scotland

Scotland endured a long and complicated process towards self-determination. In a 1979 referendum, the Scots voted in favour of the Labour government proposals to establish a Scottish Parliament, but, thanks to a special majority provision requiring at least 40 per cent of the registered electorate to vote in favour, devolution was rejected when only 32.9 per cent of the electorate voted in favour in the referendum.

2.9 Summary of Section 2

  1. Obesity is determined by a number of factors including environmental variables, such as the macronutrient content, energy density and fat content of available diets. Using whole room indirect calorimetry it has been found that humans are not good at recognizing the difference between low and high energy diets. Furthermore fat is less good at inducing satiety than are either carbohydrate or protein.

3 Is specialisation always advantageous?

Specialisation generally implies the possession of adaptations that make animals particularly effective or efficient in one or more aspects of their lives. In many of the examples used in other units in this series, mammals are likely to possess adaptations related to the acquisition and/or processing of food.

Introduction

Successful transitions – whether from lower secondary to upper secondary; at age 16; into work-based training or university; or into work at any age – are life-enhancing for individuals and crucial to our future social and economic well-being. They are also an indicator of a good school. Careers education and guidance (CEG) is therefore at the heart of a school's personal development programme and all teachers have a role in securing successful transitions for their students.

2.1 Defining ‘model’

The word ‘model’ has a range of colloquial and technical interpretations, so we need first to establish the way in which this course uses the term. As a start, we might suggest that a model is a simplified representation of reality, but even that simple definition raises some quite significant philosophical questions. A profound question is ‘what is reality?’ and I will briefly mention the distinction between modern and postmodern views of this later as an aside. Without gettin

Earth's physical resources: extracting coal and oil
Most people throw coal on the fire and put petrol in their cars without really thinking about it. But, looking at sediment deposits can reveal what type of environments created our coal and oil hundreds of millions of years ago. The five video tracks in this album examine the role of geology in determining the global distribution and availability of these valuable resources. They look at the formation of coal and how to mine it safely, the extraction of crude oil from the Athabasca oil sands and

4.2.1 Eco-efficiency = money in the bank

Business can profit from taking the environment into account (generally called eco-efficiency). Poor environmental performance is seen as a reflection of poor business practice in general. Eco-efficiency promotes the economic benefits of energy and materials savings, at the same time being first to market with new technologies or products. Since business sustainability lobbies promoted eco-efficiency in the early 1990s, the creed has gained rapid acceptance, and with good cause. There
