Film Theory and Architectural Design
This paper describes a 10 week, 3rd year architectural design studio, taught by the author, that explored the use of film and video techniques in the design process. The exploration was of (1) the potential of recently available personal computer software and hardware for image and video capture, manipulation and recording, and (2) the potential for application of video, informed by film theory, in the early stages of architectural design.

7.1 What is a business model?

The aim of this section is to look at some of the business models which have been used to drive internet applications. A business model is a high-level description of an application type which contains all the common features which can be found in specific examples of the model. For example, one of the most popular business models is the e-shop which describes a website that sells products. The model is general in that it does not describe the item that is sold or the mechanisms that a

Skeletal System
The skeletal system serves many purposes in an organism's body, including supporting and protecting body movements and producing red blood cells that the circulatory system carries. Jellyfish and worms have skeletons which are hydrostatic and allow the organism to push water in or out of their bodies. Arthropods have exoskeletons. Humans are vertebrates and have an endoskeleton made mainly of collagen.       (06:55)

Supreme Court Videos
By 1952, the citizens who had initiated the Clarendon and Farmville cases entrusted their fate to the NAACP lawyers along with citizens involved with three other cases. The Supreme Court combined them all into one case, Brown v. Board of Education. This is a good, five minute video, about the case and how lawyers Davis and Marshall "fought" it out for a verdict on racial segregation and Brown vs. Board of Education.

This activity builds on, and reinforces, Activity 4, as it is also designed to illustrate how all of us unconsciously draw from our cultures in order to interpret situations. If we as individuals do this, then organisations will do the same – after all, or

Abstract Thinking: An Introduction to Creative Thinking in Basic Design
This paper critically examines the nature of the dramatic increase in the number of students accepted in schools of architecture in Jordan, and the contradictory decrease in their artistic, creative, thought process, projects problem solving and other skills. The paper also reviews architectural curriculum and courses to identify weaknesses in handling the changes and ultimately within these constraints and in order to handle the students variable potentials, abilities and contradictions, certai

The Four Generations of Computers
Computers play a huge part in almost all of our lives, but how did these machines become so powerful and important? And what were some of the earliest models like? This collection of videos takes us through the Four Generations of computers, starting with Colossus, the world's first electronic computer (launched in 1944), and finishing with the BBC Micro (launched in 1981) and Fourth Generation Computers, looking at how technology changed throughout these years. Visiting locations such as The Na

The Many Functions of Hand Gestures While Communicating Spatial Ideas - An Empirical Case Study
Physical dimensions of the designing activity these representations will probably exist Architects substantially develop their ideas in space through a visual apprehension of spatial relations. We aim to explore how hand gestures play role in presenting geometric features, spatial relations and ideas through a qualitative evaluation of an empirical case study. (100 words)

An optimization method of the facility location by genetic algorithm
In planning of community-facilities, it is important to decide the facility location to provide the effective service for residents. The behavior of residents using the facility and the evaluation methods of the location have been studied. But, finding the optimum location is very hard in actual planning because the volume of calculation depends on the number of feasible locating points of facilities. To conquer the difficulty of searching the optimum location, we propose an optimization method

On the Expressive Power of Programming Languages for Generative Design - The Case of Higher-Order Fu
The expressive power of a language measures the breadth of ideas that can be described in that language and is strongly dependent on the constructs provided by the language. In the programming language area, one of the constructs that increases the expressive power is the concept of higher-order function (HOF). A HOF is a function that accepts functions as arguments and/or returns functions as results. HOF can drastically simplify the programming activity, reducing the development effort, and al

Introduction

In this course, we study one aspect of the fluctuating nature of an organism's environment. We consider how organisms living in a temperate climate, such as that in Britain, are adapted to cope with winter. You will see that there is much diversity of adaptations among organisms, with different species coping with the demands of a fluctuating environment in quite different ways. As cyclic variations are a widespread feature of environments, the range of adaptations to them is an important sou

A Critical Approach to the Use of Computers in Architectural Design
There are two dominant approaches to architectural and urbanistic problem solving: program based approaches and paradigm based approaches. Beyond these two, this paper proposes the critical/formalist approach as a paradigm for architectural design while summarizing the epistemological foundations of it, and investigates the possible contribution of the computers to this approach. The primary aim is to set a starting point for a more comprehensive future research.

This course will cover the basics of virtual instrumentation including use of IEEE GPIB, RS232, and Data Acquisition interfaces. The students will learn how to interface a computer to various instruments for data acquisition and instrument control. The software platform will be state-of-the-art software such as National Instrument’s LABVIEW software. The emphasis is not on the electronic aspects of the IEEE GPIB or RS232 interfaces but rather on the practical aspects of interfacing a computer
