Elementary GLOBE: Getting to Know Soil
A learning activity for the Scoop on Soils book in the Elementary GLOBE Series. Each student will make predictions about the properties of various soil samples. Then they will examine several types of soils and record their observations. Next, they will learn about soil profiles and horizons by both examining a soil sample in a jar and by creating a soil profile flip chart. The purpose of the activity is to provide the opportunity for students to ask questions and make observations about soil an

This course gives an introduction to the science of linguistic meaning. There are two branches to this discipline: semantics, the study of conventional, "compositional meaning", and pragmatics, the study of interactional meaning. This cute video teaches elementary students to count by 2. It introduces the tens and ones place also. We can count our eyes, elbows, ears, etc. by 2. This is a great resource to introduce and/or review skip counting to students. (03:36)
Probabilistic graphical models are pervasive in AI and machine learning. A recent push, however, is towards more high-level representations of uncertainty, such as probabilistic programs, probabilistic databases, and statistical relational models. In this talk, Van Den Broek presents his research on efficient algorithms for high-level probabilistic models, called lifted inference and learning algorithms.
Guy Van den Broeck graduated summa cum laude with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from KU Leuve
