Learning outcomes By the end of this unit you should be able to: explain the terms surface, surface in space, disc-like neighbourhood and half-disc-like neighbourhood; explain the terms n-fold torus, torus with n holes, Möbius band and Klein bottle; explain what is meant by the boundary of a surface, and determine the boundary number of a given surface with boundary; construct certa
20.106J Systems Microbiology (MIT)
This course covers introductory microbiology from a systems perspective, considering microbial diversity, population dynamics, and genomics. Emphasis is placed on the delicate balance between microbes and humans, and the changes that result in the emergence of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. The case study approach covers such topics as vaccines, toxins, biodefense, and infections including Legionnaire’s disease, tuberculosis, Helicobacter pylori, and plague.

Founders Day lecture 2012: Planets, life and the universe
Lord Rees of Ludlow talks about the history of the universe.
6.1 Further reading There is not a lot published on distributed development paradigms. The book by Coulouris et al. [2] indirectly introduces some of the paradigms introduced in this unit. Lynch's book [3] on distributed algorithms is full of algorithms which are message passing based. The book by Patzer and 14 others [4] is a good practical introduction to many of the technologies detailed in this unit. One of the few current books on JavaSpaces has been written by Freeman et al. [1].

Introduction The media play a huge part in sport; we find out what's happening, how our team is doing and it creates great sporting moments and sports celebrities and stars. This unit looks at the role played by the media in sport and how this has changed with the development of internet and satellite TV. Who calls the shots – athletes, teams or the media moguls? How do social scientists explain this relationship between sport and the media? This material is from our archive and is an adapted extr
4.11 Critiquing gender essentialism Look again at what Tannen and Gray say about men's and women's communicative behaviour. Then review the description of essentialism and the social con 4.2.1 ATM physical layer The ATM physical layer is divided into two sub-layers: the transmission convergence sub-layer and the physical medium sub-layer. Functions of the transmission convergence sub-layer include generating and receiving cells, and generating and verifying the cyclic redundancy check in the header error control field. For correct interpretation of ATM cells it is important to identify the beginning of a cell. In theory, if ATM cells are transmitted as a continuous stream of bits, Examples 3 and 4 5.4 How is law made? The Scotland Act 1998 provided minimum requirements for the process which was to be followed by the Parliament in creating law by considering and passing Bills. Section 36(1) of the Scotland Act 1998 required there to be at least three distinct stages to which Bills are subject, including a stage when members can debate and vote on the general principles of the Bill, a stage when they can consider and vote on its details, and a final stage when the Bill can be passed or rejected. Cat Dissection Pectoral Muscles Resource #16156 3.3.1 Care: a cautious definition For study purposes, we do need a definition of care, just as we needed a definition of informal carer. So we propose that in the context of health and social care we define care as: something that is needed when people cannot function in daily life without the practical help of others. But, as I have shown, care is a loaded word. It is both a word used by ordinary people to mean love, tende 2.2.1 Phenylketonuria The classic example of population screening is testing new-born babies for phenylketonuria (PKU). Individuals with PKU fail to make a protein, a certain enzyme, and develop mental retardation. The absence of the enzyme results in both an accumulation of phenylalanine, which causes the mental retardation, and a deficiency of tyrosine in the body, as shown in Author(s): Protecting a Pig From Summer Heat 7 Audio clip 4: Paul Paul was 30 years old when he was interviewed. He had been in and out of homelessness for most of his adult life, but had become a volunteer with the Cyrenians. He was living in a shared house with some other volunteers. Paul spent much of his childhood in a caravan in Happy Valley, near the sea, with his parents, brothers and sisters. At 21, when he was living with his girlfriend and her parents, his daughter was born. When she was two months old, they were kicked out, and Paul went to Reefer Madness: Government Efforts to Criminalize Marijuana Hosted by Young Americans for Liberty at Auburn University and the Mises Institute.
