How do Architects Design?
This study is proposes a descriptive model of the design behavior of architects. In the first section a framework for the model is proposed. In the second section the framework is tested against empirical data. 11 information processing mechanisms are observed in the data. Eight of these: information acquisition, problem interpretation, problem representation, solution generation, solution integration, solution evaluation, perception and sketching, are used in developing design solutions. The th

Efficiency of Lightweight Structural Forms: The Case of Treelike Structures - A comparative Structur
This work addresses the structural efficiency of lightweight tree-like structures for three case studies: Stuttgart Airport, Beaverton Library, and Thermal Bad Oeyenhausen. The case studies are simulated using Build simulation software, to determine the stresses induced in each structure. The material efficiency and shapes areexplored in terms of load bearing structures. Hybrids of the above structures are formed to compare the pattern morphology used by various types of tree-like structure and

Representation and re-Presentation: Emerging Digital Conventions of Architectural Communication
This paper examines the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of digital architectural representation. Emerging digital tools, processes, and methods are sponsoring new conventions for the communication of architectural ideas and motives. New conventions yielded through digital media offer fresh and currently uncodified ways to communicate. These new conventions attempt to communicate the same ideas as the old, sometimes subverting the imperative for drawing as the representation does not ref
Turnstijl Houses & Cannoli Framing
This work presumes that integrating modeling tools and digital fabrication technology into architectural practice will transform how we build the detached house. Single-family houses come in all shapes and sizes, and in doing so, imply variation as well in certain materials, methods, and lighter classes of structure. Ultimately, houses are extensions, if not expressions, of those dwelling within, yet our attempts to produce appealing manufactured houses have prioritized standardization over var

Plant Life Cycles
Which life forms reproduce at a distance, give rise to offspring miles away and even after death, trick other living things into helping them reproduce, and encourage predators to eat their young as part of their life cycle? Plants! During Session 4, we’ll continue our study of life cycles by focusing on the Plant kingdom, using flowering plants as our examples. During this

This paper tries to examine the effects of emerging digital tools in architectural design. Digital tools are not only practical instruments used for drawing, but they also affect design thinking. As the ones that are used in architectural design are mostly commercial, one can say that design thinking, the identity of the design and the creativity of the designer are defined by the companies which develop these tools. Therefore architects have to be able to manipulate these tools and personalize
This paper examines traditional teaching methods in architecture and identifies opportunities which are offered by computers for
changing the teaching process. Introduction of CAAD to the teaching schedules unquestionably and explicity uncovered a need of
changes within the whole schedule of study. In this paper we will submit the thesis that the problem does not lay in how will CAAD be
incorporated into the architectural curriculum, because it is the CAAD that has the potential to become an int

The iImprov series is intended for jazz improvisers of all levels to help them gain and perfect the tools of the craft. These apps are not presented progressively as each one is designed to target a specific need in any jazz improviser’s arsenal. Beginning and intermediate musicians can benefit from full explanations of the theory and concepts involved in tackling specific challenges
Photographer and multimedia artist Brent Wahl sometimes finds inspiration for his work just by walking around the city.
Often comprised of “collected” and staged objects, his work includes items that he’s found in various sites that are potentially loaded with meaning—from empty lots and construction sites to the side of the road. Regardless of the site’s location, it is crucial to Wahl that there is an interesting history embedded in either the place or the object.
