4.3 Dutch elm disease Not all change is a direct result of human intervention. Sometimes changes can occur over which we have little control. One such example is the case of Dutch elm disease (so-called because most of the early studies of the disease were carried out in Holland, although the disease was first observed in France in 1918). The disease is caused by a fungus, Ceratocystis ulmi, that has the elm, Ulmus procera, as its only habitat and food source. Spores of the fungus are carried by the

For the upper and middle classes, during much of the nineteenth century, this meant calling in a general practitioner. The poorest could apply for help at the outpatient department of a charitable hospital or dispensary. Another source of help was to apply for assistance from local government – in some countries the local authorities employed doctors to care for the poor. In Britain, medical help was ava

Technical Paper 10 - Intensive study of selected centres. ISBN : 085473 601 8
In Technical Paper 10, data from 12 effective pre-school centres, reflecting good child outcomes, (cognitive and/or social behavioural) have been analysed to reveal a unique 'story' for each centre. The associated Researching Effective Pedagogy in the Early Years (REPEY, Siraj-Blatchford et al DfES Research Report 356) project enabled the addition of two reception classes to the 12 EPPE cases (i.e. 14 case study centre

This video discusses the rotation of the planet, the length of the day, how the planet doesn't have a blue sky but it would be bright (like when man walked on the moon), and the orbit of the planet. Also discusses Mariner 10 and the Messanger which were sent to take pictures of Mercury. Good video for older students. In this video

The artist-activist collective Decolonize This Place stormed the museum in

The world is becoming more and more interconnected. Globalization changes how people consume, work and live almost everywhere on the world. Today, many economic, political, cultural or ecological relationships are not explainable from a national perspective. At the same time, a controversial debate about the consequences of globalization has begun. But what are the main causes for globalization? In what areas it is most prominent? And who are the winners and looser of globalization?
This paper presents multimodal representation of architectural design knowledge, where explicit and implicit information are linked. The aim is to develop computational environment that combines several modes of representation. Integration of interactive digital-models library and ontological model of architectural design factors is investigated.
