1.5 BSE and risks to human health: vCJD Given this background, it is not surprising that the possibility that BSE in cattle might pose a health risk to humans was given serious consideration from a very early stage in the outbreak. Various precautionary measures intended to eradicate BSE in cattle and also to prevent any possibility of transmission of the disease to humans were introduced. We will discuss these in more detail later in the course. At the same time, the public was repeatedly assured by both officials (e.g. the

CSUN Outstanding Grads 2014: Rossana Perez
Rossana Perez's journey to her master's degree started more than 30 years ago in her native El Salvador, when her husband, Rodolfo Aguilar, a philosophy professor, left for a meeting and never came back. It was 1981 and military death squads traveled the country targeting people identified as "threats," real or imagined, to the government.
Perez, then a philosophy student, was herself arrested a short time later by the national police. Her infant daughter was left in the care of her mother. No
7.3.1 Library-based methods for demonstrating an interaction between proteins As well as the biochemical approaches to studying protein–protein interactions, there is a variety of qualitative methods for screening ‘libraries’ of cloned genes or gene fragments whose protein products might interact with a protein of interest. Such an approach has the advantage that the genes that encode those proteins that bind are available immediately for expression, facilitating subsequent analysis of the protein. The two-hybrid system uses transcriptional activity

Filmic Development of Architectural Animations
This paper proposes a general method to make animated presentations of architectural designs, based on cinematographic techniques. Particularly, it reviews theoretical documenttion about filmmaking as well as several productions that exhibit remarkable locations. The proposed method first comprises of a planning stage, with the narrative and graphic formulation of the presentation. Next is an elaboration or adjustment stage for the digital modelling of the design, and finally, there is an animat
4.5 The sans-culotte as revolutionary hero Revolutionary symbolism (which we noted earlier with reference to the Declaration of the Rights of Man) extended to clothing: the wearing of the tricolour cockade was made compulsory for men by a decree of July 1792. The red ‘cap of liberty’ became the normal headgear of the sans-culottes, now officially idealized as heroes of the people.

1.2.9 Nick In our society we tend to expect not to have to face the likelihood of death until our 70s at least, but one group of people who are having to face the prospect of death at a relatively young age are those diagnosed as HIV-positive. Controversy surrounds the issue of whether those at risk of contracting the virus should have the blood test which might give them that death sentence. At the time of writing there is no clear evidence that any treatment can improve the prognosis, even if taken at

Controlling free flight of a robotic fly using an onboard sensor inspired by insect ocelli
This paper describes the first time a fly-sized robot -- the Harvard Robobee -- has carried a sensor onboard. In previous flights, the vehicle was "flying blind" -- it required an array of external cameras to precisely track its trajectory to control its flight. In this paper, we used a light sensor inspired by the ocelli of insects to tell the vehicle about its motion relative to a light source so that it could stay upright in flight. It will be necessary for the fly to carry sensors like this

About the Course:
Statistical Molecular Thermodynamics is a course in physical chemistry that relates the microscopic properties of molecules to the macroscopic behavior of chemical systems. Quantized molecular energy levels and their use in the construction of molecular and ensemble partition functions is described. Thermodynamic state functions, their dependence on the partition function, and their relationships with one another (as dictated by
