Research Themes

The School is committed to high quality research and was ranked 6th for Research Power among UK Geography departments in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (December 2008). The School's research community is organised into five Research themes that reflect and shape research strategy. These groups focus and co-ordinate innovative research activity, encourage collaboration within and beyond the School, foster and incorporate new and younger members of staff, and generate a critical mass of researchers in key areas of research and to provide research leadership within and beyond the School. A number of staff and students have interests in more than one theme, a reflection of the School's commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary research. A significant amount of innovative work within the School has emerged across the boundaries of Research themes, such as work on environmental history and climate change, geographies of music, and decision-support systems in farming.
