God and monster, 865 - 860 BC, Temple of Ninurta, Nimrud (Kalhu)
Ninurta holds thunderbolts in each hand, sicle sword hanging behind his back, another at his waist, as he chases a Leonine monster which has bird wings, feathers, tail, and talons. The Temple of Ninurta was destroyed by fire at the time of the fall of the Assyrian Empire in 612 BC. This badly damaged the reliefs. For more information on the temple and its god Ninurta, see the previous photo.
