Geoff Wake

Geoff Wake is a Lecturer within the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Group and is responsible for Secondary Mathematics ITE at the University of Manchester following a successful teaching career in schools and FE.  He has worked on and directed a substantial number of research and curriculum development projects funded by Gatsby, Leverhulme, Nuffield, DfES, and QCA.

Geoff’s research and curriculum development interests have applications and use of mathematics as a central theme.  Over the past fifteen years or so he has been actively engaged in work that has researched and supported curriculum design and implementation in applications of mathematics in a range of different settings, including mathematics itself, other disciplines (both academic and pre-vocational, including science), and in out-of-school settings such as workplaces.

Geoff is currently a Principle Investigator on a major ESRC funded project, “Opening doors to mathematically demanding programmes in HE” as part of the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP), for which he has been involved in the development of an instrument to measure the perceived self efficacy of students in using and applying mathematics, and the analysis of pedagogical practices of teachers in their mathematics lessons.

Geoff is also currently working as part of an EU Comenius project team with a substantial grant to develop a Teacher Training Course in Mathematical Modelling: “Learning and education in and through modelling and applications”, for which he will lead on the development of the concept of the training course and its evaluation.  He has worked substantially at national level in a consultative capacity for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority on the development and evaluation of new qualifications (Free Standing Mathematics Qualifications and AS Use of Mathematics) for post-16 students.
