Malcolm Swan

Dr Malcolm Swan is a Lecturer in the School of Education, University of Nottingham.  He conducts research into the theory, development and evaluation of teaching situations in mathematics education.

This includes the design of situations which foster reflection, discussion and metacognitive activity; the design of situations in which children construct mathematical concepts and develop problem solving strategies; and the design of formative and evaluative assessment. He has recently produced professional development resources that have been sent to all mathematics teachers in FE and numeracy teachers in the adult learning sector (with the DfES and with the Maths4Life project based at the NRDC). He is also interested in the professional development of teachers, particularly with regard to the evolution of their beliefs and practices. He has also been a Chief Examiner at the NEAB (now AQA) in Mathematics through Problem Solving at GCSE.
