RIN lecture on GNSS Vulnerabilities in Aviation
Simone Paternostro, an INNOVATE PhD student for the Vulnerability and Protection of GNSS in the Aviation Context., will be describing his PhD work on GNSS ARAIM and UAS activities within The Institute of Aerospace Technology (IAT)
GNSS systems are used for navigation purposes as well as for a wide range of uses from transport to agriculture, search and rescue, energy, telecommunications and world finance, and for some of these applications there are now no real backup systems. GNSS-based technologies have slowly replaced many other technical solutions, because they seemed to offer the most reliable and available systems. However, becoming totally dependent on a single technology has its drawbacks. Malfunctions and failures; natural interference, and unintentional and intentional jamming events could potentially cause major disruption or even disasters.
In November 2013, the INNOVATE project was started to train the next generation of skilled engineers and scientists able to understand and undertake state-of-the-art technological activities and challenges for the aero-sector in a multi-disciplinary environment. Simone’s activity is with the INNOVATE Navigation Project, which will address integrity and reliability of the information provided by GNSS, together with critical aspects of safe aircraft operations should GNSS becomes unusable. He will be investigating the use of alternative systems, sensors, and techniques in order to develop robust navigational systems fully integrated with the aircraft’s flight management systems
In addition to their own dedicated projects, the INNOVATE team members have also started with a team building exercise to design and build two UAVs, one fixed wing and one rotorcraft, with the hypothetic aim of them following a pre-set path through an area where a natural disaster has occurred and isolated the inhabitants and to deliver them food, shelter and first aid supplies, so overall, this should be a very informative evening with something for everyone.
