2. Why should I care?

Every so often handling a patient can go wrong. Tragically in Freda Cracknells case it resulted in her death. The BBC reported this on 30th August 2017 in "Sudbury care home fined for 'failings' after resident death".

The main headlines from this story are:

  • Hoisting accident causes death of an 89 year old woman
  • No adequate manual handling policy in place
  • Care home responsible pleads guilty and fined £110,000

Moving and handling people can have consequences. However the evidence suggests moving and handling can be done safely if a suitable risk assessment is conducted, staff are trained in the use of equipment and techniques, and we are physically capable of doing our job.
