Project Title: WP3 Assessing biomarkers

Supervisor: Dr. Karla Miller

Centre: Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB), Oxford

Secondment: Otto von Guericke University, Magdeburg and Siemens

Project Description

Objectives: To develop novel biomarkers for white matter at ultra high field (UHF) using high resolution diffusion tensor imaging.

Tasks and methodology: The ESR will develop novel 2D/3D sequences for data acquisition, multi-shot scheme will be used, navigator signal will be acquired for each shot for motion correction, and cardiac re-ordering scheme will be applied for further reduction of motion artefacts. To reduce the scan time, the ESR will develop fast imaging technique on 2D/3D sequences, methods like parallel imaging, multi-band excitation and sparse sampling will be investigated to achieve the best image quality. The ESR will explore the optimal sequence parameters for optimal SNR efficiency.

The ESR will analyse the estimated diffusion parameters and tractography results from patients and health subjects to find novel biomarkers for white matter diseases. The developed method will be directly applied to diffusion imaging of basal ganglia.

Results: (Ongoing) ESR to have detailed knowledge in MR physics, pulse sequence design and diffusion image analysis
12m: Develop novel sequence for high resolution diffusion imaging
24m: Develop novel acquisition methods and image reconstruction algorithms for fast imaging.
36 m: Apply the developed method in diffusion imaging at basal ganglia.
