High Performance Computing

Specifications

The facility is based on 5 seperate clusters, based on the SRIF2 hardware, now arranged in 4 'towers' (A-D), and the newer hardware acquired via SRIF3 (tower E).

Feature Towers A-D Tower E
CPU 2 x AMD Opteron 2.2 GHz single core. 2 processing cores per node. 2 x Intel Xeon (Harpertown) 3.0 GHz quad core. 8 processing cores per node.
Memory (RAM) 2 GB per node (1GB per core).
Tower B has some 4GB and 8GB nodes.
16 GB or 32 GB per node (2 GB or 4 GB per core).
Local disk scratch space 28 GB per node (14 GB per core). 190 GB per node (23.7 GB per core).
Interconnect 1 Gb ethernet. 1 Gb ethernet and 10 Gb Infiniband.

Login nodes

These are the same as the compute nodes in towerE (dual Harpertown 3.0GHz, 16GB RAM), but have 174 GB scratch, and no Infiniband interconnect.

Networked storage

Users 'home' storage of 12TB provided by Sun X4500 server, with files backed up to second server for resilience. Work storage of over 90 TB is provided by Panasas parallel storage system.
