My perspective on the Campaign journey
Rumour has it that time flies when you’re having fun – which explains why it’s hard to believe that four years have passed since publically launching the Campaign back in November 2011. Reflecting on all that has been achieved during that time, it’s apparent that the reason this incredible journey has been quite so enjoyable is because of the people. The willingness of staff, students, alumni and our local and global communities to embrace the Campaign has created a powerful sense of shared ownership, which feels pretty unique. It’s the reason we’ve been able to raise £150m a year ahead of schedule – and it’s the reason why the collective impact realised to date is so much greater than the sum of each individual contribution.
It has been incredibly inspiring to see the variety of different, often innovative ways that people have pledged their support for the Campaign. At times it has also been quite humbling to learn the personal stories underlying support for a particular cause. It’s not possible to acknowledge each and every individual contribution. Neither is it appropriate to single out one contribution as being more important than another. We’ve shown that results are best realised through collective responsibility – donating time or money – whilst simultaneously leveraging additional support from family, friends and colleagues through our actions.
As we complete this phase of our Campaign journey, it’s fair to say that time has flown – and we certainly have had fun! The shared ownership and resulting momentum created by our supporters could not have been anticipated at the outset of this journey, but means that we can confidently transition into the next phase of the Campaign.
On behalf of the University and all our beneficiaries, thank you for your continued support.
