Alumni speakers at our Impact media conference in November

How our volunteers have made a difference this year

It may have been a challenging year for anyone working in volunteering, but thanks to the commitment and dedication of our volunteers, we have still been able to achieve fantastic things during 2020!

Some of our staff share their highlights below:

"Over 570 alumni and community volunteers gave their time to 88 student experience and research projects over the past year.

"From supporting students as virtual career mentors and speakers, to championing EDI across the university and making a social impact in the local community, over 1800 students were able to benefit from the expertise and influence of alumni volunteers and advocates helping them to shape their future."

Wayne Crawford, Volunteering and Advocacy Manager – Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

"In total we've worked with over 80 alumni volunteers, directly impacting over 360 students through face-to-face or virtual events.

"Our Inspiring Women in STEM alumni virtual talk was a great success – we had four engaging speakers discussing the triumphs and challenges of women working in STEM industries.

"We also held the Faculty of Engineering’s first ever virtual networking event for students from BAME backgrounds – where we were able to connect over 40 students with inspirational alumni from around the world."

Stephanie Baxter, Volunteering and Advocacy Manager – Faculty of Engineering

“In the Faculty of Science, inspiring alumni volunteers have continued to support students from black, asian and minority ethnic backgrounds by sharing their experiences and advice, and we look forward launching the Faculty’s BAME Mentoring Programme in Spring 2021.”

Emily Bateman, Volunteering and Advocacy Manager – Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

A big thank you to anyone who has dedicated their time and expertise to volunteer with the University this year and we look forward to working with more of you in 2021!
