The world's first Liquid Phase Photoelectron Spectroscopy (LiPPS) XPS instrument will be officially launched on Tuesday 17th December. This exciting event will be marked with a series of talks (X1, Chemistry, 13:30 - 16:30) from several venerated speakers including Dr Hans-Peter Steinrück from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. There will also be informal accompanied viewings of the LiPPS instrument within the new XPS suite at the Nottingham Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre (NNNC).
Current instrumentation in the XPS field allows only for the analysis of solid substances. LiPPS will be easier to operate, able to deal with a wider range of sample types and to acquire data autonomously. Dedicated to liquid surface investigations, it is designed to probe solution processes, by moving to a harder X-ray source (i.e Ag L infinity) with more bulk sensitivity.
The facility will open up an entirely new sector for the research community, generating new avenues for research and supporting training of early stage career researchers, as well as strengthening the NNNC's capacity to perform and provide world leading research and services.
