Mitosis

Mitosis occurs in most cells of the body and results in the production of two identical ‘daughter’ cells from one ‘parent’ cell. These cells have the same number of chromosomes as the original cell and are termed diploid – the cells have the full complement of chromosomes. Mitosis is important in the development of the foetus, growth, repair, and replacement of ‘worn out’ body cells.
