Glossary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Arterial Blood Gas analysis (ABG) | a test that is performed to determine the concentration of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and bicarbonate ions as well as the pH of blood. |
| Buffer | a substance that resists changes in pH by binding or donating hydrogen ions. |
| Extracellular | outside the cell. |
| Haemoglobin | a protein within the red blood cell which carries oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. |
| Homeostasis | the physiological processes that maintain a relatively constant internal environment, despite changes in external conditions. |
| Intracellular | inside the cell. |
| Ions | an atom or molecule that has positive (cation) or negative (anion) charge. |
| Metabolism | the biochemical processes that occur within the body. |
| Ph | is the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. |
| Respiration | the exchange of gases between the air in the lungs, the blood, and the cells of the body. |
