Dr Sharon Belmo

We're delighted to share the news that Dr Sharon Belmo, clinical lead for the CEBD Skin of Colour Resource, has received recognition for her contribution to the MIMS Dermatology `Skin of colour matters' campaign which won the content excellence category of the Haymarket Business Media in-company awards.

`The Skin of Colour Matters campaign and educational materials aimed to fill an education gap among UK healthcare professionals. Until now they have been trained on the appearance and nature of skin conditions on white skin, but the UK population is diverse, so there's potential for missed or delayed diagnosis of serious skin conditions. Rhiannon Ashman (deputy editor of MIMS Learning) worked with dermatology consultant Dr Sharon Belmo to create this important set of learning materials covering how common skin conditions appear in darker skin, along with information about conditions more prevalent in minority ethnic populations.

We're really delighted to win this award as the Skin of Colour Matters campaign had social relevance and fantastic audience engagement wherever it appeared - in print, online and on social media. The learning materials continue to get great engagement, with Dr Belmo's webinar outperforming all other content on the site. As a spin-off, we have opened dialogue with photo libraries about the need for diversity in depictions of skin of colour and the need for stock images to better reflect the diversity of patients and healthcare professionals.'
