Description

Workshop: 'Visual Histories of Occupation'

Friday 23 June 2017, University of Nottingham (UK campus)

This one-day workshop will involve scholars from around the world working on different cases of 'foreign occupation' across the modern era. While presenters will be able to discuss their current and recent work in the field, it is also hoped that such presentations will give rise to wider conceptual, methodological and theoretical discussions which will be of interest to participants working in different disciplinary and geographic contexts.

Discussion at the workshop will revolve around three distinct yet inter-related questions. These are:

  1. How can scholars use visual sources to better understand the cultural history of occupation in its broadest sense?
  2. How does the context of occupation lead to the development of distinctive visual cultures?
  3. What might comparative studies of visual cultures in different geographic and temporal contexts contribute to a better understanding of individual cases of occupation, and of occupation more generally?

We are expecting to welcome a minimum of 12 external speakers to the workshop, but also to allot sufficient time for general discussion based on the papers presented and the three fundamental questions listed above.
