Current Research

Prof. Liptovszky's current research includes a variety of topics within the fields of zoological medicine, One Health, and wildlife conservation. In recent years he has spent significant time focusing on great ape health, specifically on understanding pathophysiological background of cardiac disease in great apes, and how husbandry and nutrition factors can help optimising the health of these animals in human care. As an example, he is part of a research group investigating vitamin D deficiency in great apes in human care across Europe and internationally, to understand how this might enable common diseases, especially cardiac disease.

Other research areas he is currently active in include conservation of threatened species, and improving ex situ conservation outcomes; utilising technology, especially artificial intelligence, in zoo animal welfare and health; and anaesthesia of wildlife species.
