Robert graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Nottingham in 2013. After two years in farm animal practice he returned to the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science to complete a Senior Clinical Training Scholarship (Residency). During his residency, he was awarded the Nottingham University Tri Campus postgraduate teaching award, the Gertrude Cropper research award, became a diplomate of the European college of Bovine Health Management in 2018 and an RCVS recognised specialist in 2019. Robert obtained a PhD from the University of Nottingham entitled "Statistical learning approaches to optimise the health, welfare, and productivity of calves on dairy farms", during which he was awarded the Andrew Hendry research award and subsequently joined the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science as an Assistant Professor in 2022.

Robert's primary interest is in machine learning, machine vision and data analytics. Previous research includes the use of statistical learning to identify factors associated with calf health and performance, as well as the use of machine learning to automate the diagnosis of mastitis herd level origin on dairy farms. His current research involves simulation modelling and the use of machine vision to automatically identify key health and welfare outcomes in cattle.
