Saving energy with the Building Management System (BMS)

The BMS is a a computer-based control system for monitoring and optimising heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and other critical building systems.

Small changes lead to big energy savings
James Bugg is a BMS engineer: “I try and balance energy consumption with occupant comfort. For example, I review the running hours of heating and ventilation systems and compare with when the spaces are open. In one building, systems were running 168 hours a week more than needed, which led to a significant saving with no negative impacts. I've also modified programming to automatically use free cooling from outside rather than relying on cooling systems to lower temperatures.”

As around 50% of UoN's £25m+ energy bill is attributed to heating and cooling buildings, and as energy prices have risen greatly, it’s imperative we reduce our energy demand - the BMS is therefore a key tool for meeting our carbon reduction targets.

Find out more about the BMS

James has worked for UoN in various roles since 2016. In March 2022 he joined the sustainability team to manage the BMS. He was joined in August by Douglas Leung, who brings extensive relevant experience and knowledge from 26 years at City University of Hong Kong.
