Overview

As of March '08, eighteen PhD studentships have been funded by the IDTC across eight Schools. Proposals with matched funding submitted in response to calls in '03, '04 and '05 were reviewed by a panel of University of Nottingham researchers whose collective expertise spans the physics, chemistry, pharmaceutical, biomedical, and materials science disciplines. The final cohort of students are expected to complete their studies by October '08. The criteria for project selection were as follows:

  • Multidisciplinary - cross-School collaboration essential
  • Ideally, the project should be linked to one of the following themes:
    1. Nanotubes, self-assembled nanostructures, single molecule electronics
    2. Optical probes of nanostructured materials
    3. Surface functionalisation for bio-nanotechnology
    4. Single molecule microscopy, mechanics, and manipulation
    5. Novel processing and low cost lithograph
  • Scientific Quality
  • Pump-priming of new collaborative efforts
  • Potential for attracting external funding

A brief description of each of the IDTC projects funded to date is given (please click the images on the left). Further information for a particular project may be obtained from the studentship supervisors.
