Why do we do it?

This essential process (of ventilation) ensures that a constant exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place between the lungs and the pulmonary blood. The oxygen is ultimately used to release energy in all our body tissues. This is similar to a log fire needing oxygen to burn and release heat energy. In both processes carbon dioxide is given-off as waste.
