Biography
In 2018, I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a first-class honours degree in Learning Disability Nursing. During my time as a student nurse, I experienced a variety of placement settings and was fortunate enough to be shortlisted as a finalist for student nursing times award in 2018 for the category, "student innovation in practice".
My first nursing job was within locked rehabilitation services for males with a learning disability detained under the Mental Health Act, often with a forensic history. Within this I also undertook the role of care coordinator, name nurse for numerous patients and regularly held the nurse in charge role, leading the unit daily. The ethos of this service was to support patients with the transition from locked services into the community with a heavy focus on risk management that included positive risk taking.
I also undertook a short secondment to an intensive community assessment and treatment team. This involved working with patients in the community who may be at risk of placement breakdowns. The aim was to provide intense support to patients, family and their care teams to ensure patients remain in the community with a good quality of life.
My nursing career has also taken me to working as a staff nurse within a low secure hospital. Here, I worked primarily on a male ward for people with a learning disability also detained under the Mental Health Act. During Covid I also worked alongside a assessment and treatment inpatient unit as a staff nurse.
In November 2021 I joined the University as a teaching associate. My role is multifaceted but alongside teaching I also work as placement development lead across multiple programs and I am part of the global engagement and elective team for the school of health science.
