The China Policy Institute is delighted to announce that Professor Tse-Kang Leng, Research Fellow of the Institute of Political Science of Academia Sinica (IPSAS) and Professor of Political Science at National Chengchi University, will present the next Taiwan Studies lecture on Thursday 26th March.
Professor Leng’s research interests focus on theories of both international and cross-Straits relations, the political economy of globalisation, and the political economy of urban development in China. His recent academic works include: Chinese Models of Development (Roman and Littlefield, 2014, co-editing with Yu-shan Wu); Local States, Institutional Changes, and Innovations Systems: Beijing and Shanghai Compared (Journal of Contemporary Chi¬na, March 2013, co-authored with Jenn-hwan Wang); Coping with China in Hard Times: Taiwan in Global and Domestic Per¬spectives (Pacific Focus, vol. 26, no. 3, Dec 2011); Governance of Biodiversity Conservation in China and Taiwan (Edward El¬gar Publishing, 2006, co-authored with Gerald McBeath).

Abstract:
This lecture will analyse the political, historical and global sources of the recent assertiveness of Chinese foreign policy. The focus will be put in the context of East-Asia in general, and the Beijing-Washington-Taipei relationship in particular. Recent domestic changes in Taiwan create uncertainty on cross-Strait relations. This lecture will also seek to introduce the domestic dynamics of this unique relationship, and the potential impacts on the stability of East Asia.
