Waseda University, Japan talking  on China's Evolving Foreign Policy and Implications for Cross-Strait Relations.

Rumi Aoyama is the director of Waseda Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies, and the Professor at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies at Waseda University. She has been a visiting scholar at Stanford University (2005-2006), George Washington University (2016-2017), and National Chengchi University (2017).  She earned her PhD in Law from the Graduate School of Law, Keio University. She specialises in China’s contemporary foreign policy and politics. Her publication Contemporary China’s Foreign Policy (Keio University Press, 2008), was honored with the 24th Masayoshi Ohira Foundation Memorial Prize.  Her other publications include Decoding the Rise of China (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018); A Diplomatic History of the People’s Republic of China (University of Tokyo Press, 2017); China and the Future of International Order (University of Tokyo Press, 2015); China’s Asia Policy in the Post-cold War Era, (University of Tokyo Press, 2013); China’s Global Strategy (Akashi Press, 2011); China’s Public Diplomacy Strategy (The Japan Foundation, 2009).

Abstract

China has experienced remarkable economic development over the last three decades, achieving double-digit economic growth rates. Besides this rapid economic growth, China’s political and economic influence has expanded far beyond the Asia-Pacific region. In order to understand China’s evolving grand strategy, this talk will address questions such as: What are China’s fundamental foreign policy objectives? How has the Chinese government employed diplomacy, in the pursuit of these objectives, over the last two decades? And what are the implications for cross-Strait relations?
