When I first heard about the Nottingham Advantage Award (NAA) module, The Importance of Representation in the Students’ Union, I was intrigued by its content and the flexibility it offered.

Why I chose the module

As a student with a demanding course load, I needed something that wouldn't overwhelm me but still provided substantial learning opportunities. This module perfectly fit those criteria. The flexibility was a significant plus; ample time was given to complete the module, and our busy schedules were taken into account, making it a stress-free addition to our studies.

What I learned

The module centred around self-awareness and reflection, particularly through my involvement in the Student's Union. It was designed to encourage us to delve deeply into our own experiences and to understand the importance of representation.

As an international Indian student, I found the module's exploration of representation deeply intriguing. It resonated with my experiences, sparking curiosity about how diverse perspectives are depicted and understood in global contexts, and enriching my academic journey.

One of the most valuable aspects was how it fostered my self-reflection and development. I learned to assess my experiences critically, understand my strengths and weaknesses, and think about how I could contribute more effectively to student life and beyond.

Impact on my course and future career

Currently, I am pursuing my Master's in Mental Health, and the skills I developed through this module have been incredibly beneficial. The emphasis on self-awareness and reflection has allowed me to understand myself better and reflect on my thoughts and feelings throughout my studies.

As someone aspiring to become a mental health professional, introspection is a crucial quality, and this module has significantly enhanced that aspect of my personal and professional development. Each topic challenged me to critically evaluate my perspectives and assumptions, fostering a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. I learned to navigate complexities with nuance and empathy, skills invaluable both in academia and beyond.

Stand out parts of the module

Two activities within the module that stood out to me were the STAR task and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test.

The STAR task helped me articulate my experiences and achievements in a structured manner, which is immensely helpful for interviews and professional development.

The MBTI test provided insights into my personality traits and how they influence my interactions and decision-making processes, which is vital for a career in mental health.

The insights gained have laid a strong foundation for my future career aspirations, equipping me with the adaptability and resilience necessary in today's dynamic professional landscape.

Advice for prospective NAA students

For those considering whether to take the NAA module, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The module offers something for everyone, and its flexible nature ensures that it won't add undue pressure on top of your existing coursework. It is an excellent opportunity to engage in self-discovery, develop critical skills, and gain valuable insights that will benefit you both academically and professionally.

Final thoughts

Overall, my experience with The Importance of Representation in the Students’ Union module has been enriching and transformative. It has equipped me with tools and perspectives that I will carry forward into my future career. If you have the chance to enrol in this module, seize it – you won’t regret it.
