Guilds, Enterprise and Production Cultures in Hollywood

The cultural industries provide a context to study continuities and changes affecting contemporary work and organization. Among a multitude of production cultures in the cultural industries, the TV and film sub-sectors, especially those concentrated in and around Hollywood, have become a focal point of interest for scholars examining questions surrounding labour relations, organization and institutional change. UNIEI is pleased to welcome Tom Walsh who will provide a unique insight into the Hollywood production culture.

Tom is one of the most experienced and decorated production designers today. His work spans several media (including, film, TV, video games, large screen formats and others) over two decades. He is an Emmy award winner and the designer of one of the most popular TV shows in recent years, Desperate Housewives. Tom is also the President of the Art Directors’ Guild of America (ADG) in Hollywood. The Guild is the most significant labour and professional organization in the sector and a gateway to over 2,000 industry professionals and companies in Hollywood.

Following his presentation Tom has invited colleagues to debate the challenges and opportunities facing the cultural industries. The event will be of interest to those who wish to gain a unique insight into the dynamics of guilds, enterprise and production in one of the key locations and sub-sectors of the global cultural industries.

Organised by the University of Nottingham Institutes for Enterprise and Innovation (UNIEI) in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Film and Media and the Centre for Advanced Studies.
