First year Chemical Engineering student Rachel Stephenson has become the youngest person to receive the Special Mention of the Jury Award, a prize in the European Space Agency’s Space for Sustainability Award.
Rachel’s project showcased the development of an idea for creating an algorithm that accurately predicts cetacean strandings – the beaching of aquatic mammals such as whales and dolphins.
This algorithm could provide early warning to cetacean rescue organisation, meaning that the stranding severity could be reduced or potentially prevented.
Rachel plans to continue working on this project with a view to one day implementing it.
