Athletes from the University of Nottingham’s sporting community played a key part in Team England’s medal haul at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

A number of current students, alumni, UoN staff and associates took part in the Games — one of the largest multi-sport championships in the world — during April 2018 at Australia’s Gold Coast.

They won a fantastic total of 11 medals, helping boost Team England’s overall score to 136 medals including 45 golds, 45 silvers and 46 bronze medals.

Among the high performances were those of University of Nottingham student, Maria Tsaptsinos, and Head Coach Kelly Sibley, who won an historic bronze medal in the table tennis team event — marking the first table tennis medal of the games and crowning another incredible year for University of Nottingham Table Tennis.

The enthusiastic support of Maria Tsaptsinos for her team mates was also picked up by the BBC, who created a 'ping pong passion' video featuring some great shots of the team in action, with close ups of Maria spurring them on!

Elsewhere, the Men’s and Women’s hockey teams both beat India in bronze medal matches to ensure alumni George Pinner, James Gall, Harry Martin and Joanne Hunter all made the podium for Team England.

In summary, the medal tally and contribution from UoN Sport is as follows:

  • 1 current student (1 medal)
  • 1 current staff member (1 medal)
  • 6 Alumni (4 medals)
  • 8 Associates (5 medals)

The Department of Sport has published a roundup providing more details about how all of those associated with UoN Sport succeeded in the Games. Read it here.

Many congratulations to all of our athletes for their performances during the Games!
