Make sure you're registered to vote in the European Parliament elections

Vote 714x249

European Parliament elections are currently scheduled to take place in the UK on Thursday 23 May.

For this and other elections in the UK, it is important to make sure that you are registered to vote.

You might have recently received an ‘Invitation to Register’ form through the post at your University address. These forms are sent by Nottingham City Council to encourage you to register to vote here in Nottingham. Alternatively, you can register to vote online.

You have until Tuesday 7 May to register to vote.

As a student, you are entitled to be registered to vote at both your home and your term-time addresses. Registering to vote in Nottingham also helps you to access council services such as parking permits and pest control, which you might otherwise be delayed in accessing.

If you receive an Invitation to Register and you don’t want to be registered in Nottingham, please contact Nottingham City Council’s Electoral Services team (elections@nottinghamcity.gov.uk, 0115 876 4111) or return the blank ITR with a note to let them know.

International and EU students

If you’re a student from the EU, Commonwealth or British Territories then you are still able to register to vote here in Nottingham. You do not need to have British citizenship to be eligible. However, you will also need to complete this form to confirm that you will only take part in European Parliament elections in the UK, and not also in your home country. This form must be returned to your electoral registration officer (their contact details are available on the Your Vote Matters website). It must be received by Tuesday 7 May and it can be scanned and emailed to your electoral registration officer. To register to vote, you will need your National Insurance number or another form of ID.

Any international students who do not belong to the above groups are unfortunately not eligible to register in the UK. However, you can still access the non-statutory council services directly as long as you can provide evidence of your Nottingham address.

If you’re not sure whether you’re eligible to vote, you can check on the Your Vote Matters website.

Local council elections

Please note that it is, unfortunately, too late to register for the local council elections, which take place on Thursday 2 May.
