Plans for the summer term and the 2021/22 academic year

Tuesday, 11 May 2021
The Department for Education has now confirmed that universities are able to resume face-to-face teaching activities for all students from Monday 17 May 2021.

You can read the latest update from the Department of Education here. The return to face-to-face teaching activities is later than all of us would have wanted, and later than many universities including Nottingham have been lobbying for, but nonetheless welcome news.

While we know that many of you are already in the city, we are pleased to be able to welcome you all back onto campus for what will be a period of revision and assessment. As previously communicated, assessments will take place - largely online - between Tuesday 1 and Friday 18 June.

Returning to campus will enable you to prepare for assessments using our libraries, laboratories and study spaces as well as enjoying the social and sporting activities available on campus. You may find the Department for Education blog - which sets out government plans for all universities – a useful read. From Monday 17 May we will also see indoor sport resume, along with pubs and restaurants able to serve indoors, more facilities opening up across Nottingham, and fewer restrictions on socialising.

Wherever possible schools and departments will also look at providing optional in-person activities such as revision sessions and tutor meetings. For students who cannot - or choose not - to return, there will be online equivalents.

Your school or department will be in touch to confirm the next steps. You can also read more, including details about booking your return asymptomatic Covid-19 tests on our Return to Campus pages.

Academic year 2021/22

We are all looking forward to a time of fewer restrictions on your teaching, social activity and campus life, and we are working hard to prepare our campuses for an exceptional Nottingham student experience in the new academic year, including a two-week Welcome period to (re)introduce you to your fellow students, activities and student societies.

Although there is a current easing of restrictions, there is concern that the autumn may see a resurgence of Covid-19 infections. With this in mind, we have had to plan for a flexible approach with your health and safety at the forefront of our planning. This includes supporting vaccination and our comprehensive on-campus Covid-19 testing programme, and being prepared to reinstate social distancing measures if instructed to do so by the government or health authorities.

We will teach you in-person wherever possible and we are preparing small group tutorials, lab classes, workshops and seminars to engage you with your subjects and with your tutors and fellow students in stimulating and enjoyable ways.

We will monitor and adjust our teaching approach according to the progress of the pandemic. We will use the best of digital technologies to support in-person teaching, and to provide live, interactive online sessions, alongside pre-recorded teaching materials for you to work through at your own pace. The mix of in-person and digital teaching will vary by course, however, we aim to increase the proportion of in-person teaching in the spring term.

Your school or department will contact you soon to let you know the detailed arrangements for your teaching. We are committed to reviewing our arrangements across the year to offer the best possible student experience, consulting you and keeping you updated as we continue to follow government guidelines. You can also read more on our Returning in September page.

Please remember to Isolate, Notify, Test if you do start to experience Coronavirus symptoms and let the university know, even if you are not in Nottingham.
