Research Assessment Success

The Nottingham School of Economics has consolidated its position as one of the country's leading research groups in Economics according to the results of the UK's Research Evaluation Framework exercise announced on 18 December 2014.

The School was ranked 6th among the UK's Economics departments judged by the overall research power measure which takes into account both the strength and depth of a department’s research activities. All of the research activities in the School were considered 'international' in standing by the review, and 90% were considered 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'.

Head of School, Professor Kevin Lee, said "I am delighted with the REF 2014 results which reflect the intellectual rigour, breadth of coverage and vitality of the school's research. The results show that students, staff and visitors to the School in Nottingham benefit from an extremely strong and supportive research culture."

About the REF

The REF is the prestigious government exercise undertaken by the four higher education funding bodies and designed to assess the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (HEIs). The REF was completed in December 2014 and it replaced the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which was last completed in 2008.

The REF is extremely important to HEIs as it is used to allocate funding and is used in university league tables and benchmarking. The assessment also provides accountability for public investment in research and produces evidence of the benefits of this investment.
